7 Ways to Practice Self-Care in Autumn

Autumn is officially arrived and for those living in chronic pain we usually say that we can feel it coming. Cooler weather means increase in pain and fatigue for most. In order to combat some of these tougher, cold mornings or days we need a plan so here are 7 ways to practice self care this autumn.

As the cooler weather begins, find your cozy cardigans, socks, and blankets. Make certain those favorite Fall friends are close at hand so on the cooler mornings you can snuggle up. In the South, it is a bit hard to find cold weather even in October, but we do have cool mornings. I am often saying to my sweet husband how cold my feet are at all times.

Second, grab your stock pile of books that have been begging to be read all Summer. There is always a stack of books beside my bed and a few on my Kindle just waiting for me to slow down. Gather your reading materials and have them near your favorite reading spot. A cozy blanket near this location is always a good idea as well. On days where you can slow down you will be prepared to read.

Purchase your favorite warm beverage ingredients ready to make at home.

Tea bags, hot cocoa, chia tea, coffee, or other warm drink should be sitting ready in the kitchen for you to whip up a cup of warmth and comfort at a moments notice. Chills in the cooler weather can sweep in and grab those with chronic pain to the bone so a warm drink can easily help warm you from the inside.

Practice Self-Care in Autumn

Bundle up on a pain-less day for a walk outside. A stroll around your neighborhood midday to see the changing colors can give you a Vitamin D boost. If you live near a trail then wrap up and head out for a short hike. Excercise even in smaller dose is good for fibromyalgia sufferers. It releases endorphins, gets the stiffness out of our aching sore muscles and can be a distraction from the thoughts of our chronic pain.

If cooler weather has you inside more then maybe it is a great time to pick up a new hobby. Learn to crochet or knit. You can find lots of great YouTube tutorials to help get you start. Begin to purge those photos that you have been meaning to sort and organize. Learn to cook a new style of cooking that you have wanted to try. There are so many great new hobbies to learn while you are inside.

A helpful thing to do for self care when you are feeling the chill of autumn is to focus on warmth.

What are things that make you warm? Make a fire in the fireplace, a warm pot of soup, the comfort of a dear friend or family member, or snuggling with your pet. Think of the things in your life that give you warmth and do those things. A good way to remember those warm things in your life is to make a list.

Lastly, a way to practice self care in Autumn is to grab your coziest pjs and a pair of soft warm socks. Curling up in our pjs watching a movie is always a fun way to bring love and self care. Check out Hallmark channel or Netflix for your favorite genre of movie. No matter the movie the key is warm pjs, socks and a good movie all equal great self care!
